Fairview Youth in Action: A Youth-Driven, Community-Engaged Program to Create Communities Safe for Active Living

At this presentation, participants will learn youth engagement strategies through the lens of a multi-year, youth-driven project. Like many communities, Hillsborough’s Fairview neighborhood is not designed to support healthy active living. A lack of sidewalks, bike paths and street lighting, along with limited access to parks, public places and accessible supermarkets, make healthy choices challenging. Since 2019, the UNC Food, Fitness and Opportunity Research Collaborative (UNC FFORC) has partnered with passionate youth to promote active living through the Fairview Youth in Action Program. UNC FFORC works alongside youth interns to conduct mapping and assessment exercises, interview local policymakers and community stakeholders and gain input from the wider community through outreach and advocacy events.
