Bringing Local Black History into the Classroom: Increasing Access to Oral Histories Through Transcription

February 28 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Students wearing headphones and using computers sitting at desks in a classroom

Through this workshop, participants will be introduced to the Marian Cheek Jackson Center’s oral history and processing methodology, as well as how oral history clip transcription aids our work done at the K-12 level. The second portion gives attendees the opportunity to transcribe oral history clips from the Center’s community history website, fromtherockwall.org. These transcriptions will be used by K-12 teachers, ensuring that local Black history, as told by the people who lived it, is an important part of the educational experience of students for years to come. All of this work supports the Center’s core mission to honor, renew and build community in and beyond the neighborhoods of Black Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

Registration for this event has closed. Thanks to everyone who came Wednesday evening!
