Marian Cheek Jackson Center: Involving Students in Community-First Oral History

March 2, 2023 @ 8:00 am - 9:30 am

Through this workshop, participants will be introduced to the Marian Cheek Jackson Center’s oral history methodology. Through this methodology, the Jackson Center pushes against the historically exploitative relationship that can characterize interactions between community members and academic researchers. Throughout the academic year, the Jackson Center hosts workshops to teach UNC-Chapel Hill students about ethnographic oral history: listening exchanges deeply embedded in cultural practices, values and history that the listener is privileged to learn and bridge. By listening to act, oral historians aim to use the stories they hear to inform strategic advocacy for change as a path toward justice for the storytellers. All of this work supports the Jackson Center’s core mission to honor, renew and build community in and beyond the neighborhoods of Black Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

Carolina Engagement Week is pleased to feature three events across the week to spotlight work being done in collaboration with the Marian Cheek Jackson Center!
