Compassion as a Catalyst for Change: A Positive Psychology Lens on the Benefits of Meaningful Service Engagement for Students

February 29 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Undergraduate students can and should be empowered to serve and get involved in the community during their time at Carolina. Attendees will learn from and contribute to a meaningful conversation about service engagement. Cate Schultz, a senior at Carolina and Buckley Public Service Scholar program participant, will share her experiences from Wonder Connection (at UNC Children’s Hospital) and Carrboro Boys and Girls Club, and her community-based research.

“Human beings are wired to care and give…and it’s probably our best route to happiness,” (Dacher Keltner, Berkeley). Indeed, community service uniquely enables a sense of purpose and belonging often to forgotten amidst hectic academic pursuits. The strengths-focused, positive psychology lens (developed at the University of Pennsylvania) will be reviewed at this presentation. The workshop will include a compassion mural, a positive psychology strengths game and community reflection.

Registration for this event is closed. Thanks to everyone who came out on Thursday afternoon!
