Seeing Communities as Experts on their Own Data: A Research-Practice Partnership

February 24 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Authentic community engagement is a key tenet of anti-racism research, which includes providing ways for community members to review and make sense of data. With research coordination from UNC’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, the Educare Learning Network, a national network of early childhood scholars, has worked to advance more equitable research practices inclusive of leadership, staff, and families. While we are early childhood researchers, building more equitable research practices is essential for all scholars, regardless of field of study. In this workshop we present core tenets of anti-racism research practice, share examples of engagement including data literacy practices and data walks, and lead participants through a sample data walk. We highlight our data walk events inviting participants to contextualize findings and co-construct program and policy solutions.
