Policy Slam: Using a novel engagement technique to get people talking about how new policies can be used to create a more equitable city

February 27 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for a policy slam simulation, a competition in which contestants give a lightning presentation to pitch a policy to reduce inequities and advance equity in our cities. We will start with an overview of the format and the motivation for the topic. The contestants from our first ever policy slam in April 2024 (https://nextnc.org/in-review-policy-slam-competition/) will give their presentations and then the audience will simulate voting for their favorite. We will end with details about how attendees can participate in the next Policy Slam and how they can host their own slam to engage the public in creating a more equitable world.

Presenters: The UNC Community, Equity and Sustainability Working Group NEXT Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Molly De Marco, PhD MPH (Professor of Nutrition, working group member, NEXT Co-founder), Whitney Hall, UNC-CH Second Year double majoring in Public Policy and Hispanic Studies with a minor in City and Regional Planning, Juliet Alegria, Second Year MSW Student, Patrick McDonogh, Community Member
