Honoring Chapel Hill’s Civil Rights Change Makers: A Transcribe-a-thon Event for the Digital Freedom Fighters Gateway

February 26 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am

Black and Purple logo of letters MCJC. Text reads "Marian Cheek Jackson Center, Community Justice."

Participants will explore Chapel Hill’s civil rights legacy and the work of The Marian Cheek Jackson Center, a nonprofit that honors, renews and builds community in local historically Black neighborhoods. We will focus on our gateways project, which honors pillars of the community (including civil rights change-makers) with physical monuments inspired by oral histories. Participants can be a part of preserving this important history by creating short transcripts of oral histories for a wide range of users, including K-12 educators and their students in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. Participants should bring their own laptops, smart devices and headphones to access audio clips via QR codes and transcribe short (2-3 minute) audio clips about local civil rights history.

Presenters: Kathryn Wall, Co-Director of Public History, Marian Cheek Jackson Center and Anna Spencer, Co-Director of Public History, Marian Cheek Jackson Center
